A reducer is a central pressure-control component in an automotive gas system. It receives fuel at a higher pressure and delivers it at a stable lower pressure suited to the downstream metering system, but CNG and LPG reducers are designed for different fuel conditions.

Pressure reduction and regulation
The reducer uses staged regulation, diaphragms, springs and valves to control outlet pressure as engine demand changes. Stable delivery helps the mixer or injectors meter fuel consistently.
Its operating specification must match the fuel, engine demand and system architecture.
Why engine coolant is used
Gas expansion and, for LPG, vaporisation can cool the regulator significantly. Many automotive reducers circulate warm engine coolant through the body to prevent icing and maintain stable operation.
Air locks, restricted hoses or poor coolant flow can cause unstable pressure and difficult changeover.
CNG and LPG units are not interchangeable
CNG arrives as a high-pressure gas, while automotive LPG is commonly stored as a pressurised liquid and must vaporise. Their inlet conditions, internal design and calibration requirements differ.
Choose a reducer specifically rated and configured for the fuel and application rather than adapting one by appearance or connection size.
Service symptoms and checks
Uneven idle, difficult changeover, pressure fluctuation, coolant odour or unexplained gas consumption may warrant inspection. Similar symptoms can come from filters, injectors, sensors or engine faults, so diagnosis should cover the whole system.
Any gas leak or damaged pressure component should be handled promptly by a qualified technician.
