A closed-loop CNG system uses feedback from the engine's oxygen sensor to refine fuelling while the vehicle is running. When the system is compatible, correctly calibrated and well maintained, this feedback can help keep combustion closer to the intended air-fuel balance as conditions change.

What makes the system closed loop

The oxygen sensor reports whether combustion is trending rich or lean. A suitable controller interprets that signal and adjusts gas delivery, creating a continuing feedback loop rather than relying only on a fixed setting.

The exact control strategy varies by kit and vehicle, so closed-loop capability should be confirmed for the specific engine and emission system.

How feedback can support efficiency

Accurate mixture correction can reduce unnecessary over-fuelling and help the engine respond consistently across changes in load, speed and temperature. It may also support steadier idle and smoother changeover when the rest of the system is in good condition.

Results are vehicle-specific; the feedback loop cannot compensate for every mechanical fault, unsuitable component or poor base calibration.

Sensors and calibration still matter

A slow or faulty oxygen sensor, intake leak, weak ignition component or incorrect gas pressure can distort the information used for correction. Proper diagnosis should therefore check live sensor behaviour as well as CNG pressure and injector operation.

Calibration should be performed across representative operating conditions, not judged only by how the engine idles in the workshop.

Signs that inspection is needed

A warning lamp, unstable idle, hesitation, repeated fuel switching or an unexplained change in consumption can indicate a sensor, wiring, pressure or calibration issue. A trained technician can compare petrol and CNG data before replacing parts.

Regular filter, ignition and leak checks remain necessary because electronic correction is only one part of efficient CNG operation.
