Cleaner combustion at the vehicle
Natural gas mixes readily with air and contains less carbon per unit of energy than many liquid fossil fuels. In a suitable engine this can reduce particulate matter and some carbon-based emissions at the exhaust.

Local air quality and climate are different questions
Lower smoke and particulate emissions can help urban air quality, especially where CNG replaces an older, more polluting fuel system. Climate impact requires a wider view that includes fuel production, transport and possible methane leakage.
CNG should therefore be treated as one transitional option alongside cleaner engines, public transport, electrification and reduced vehicle use.
Vehicle condition matters
Correct air-fuel control, sound ignition components and functioning emission sensors help the engine burn CNG consistently. Warning lamps, rough running or a gas smell should be investigated instead of being accepted as normal conversion behaviour.
Make a practical comparison
Compare vehicles of a similar age, duty and emission standard rather than assuming that fuel type alone determines pollution. A current emission test and a competent inspection provide more useful evidence about an individual vehicle.
